“I have been staying at the MDI Home from Home apartment since 2015” - Meet Shelley Cowan

I have been staying at the MDI Home from Home apartment since 2015. I live Dublin and I’m from Enniskillen County Fermanagh. I was confined to bed for 12 years and a wheelchair user for a decade – MDI has been brilliant to be able to go somewhere that I know everything I need a there

We asked them a few questions about their experience with staying at the Home from Home apartment:

What is your favourite feature of the apartment?

To be honest it’s the bath in room 3 - I’ve just brilliant memories of being able to take a bath for the first time in 20 years because the bathroom had an overhead hoist which I could be transferred from wheelchair to bath easily and safely. I love how inclusive and accessible the apartment is, every room is carefully adapted to suit a variety of access needs from hoists and profiling beds in the rooms to the height adjustable kitchen table. It truly is a home from home.

Has the apartment benefitted you in any way? If so, how?

It enable me to go on holidays and to visit Dublin. The buses are wheelchair accessible and take you straight into the city. The apartment allowed me to broaden my horizons and meet some lovely people along the way

Were there any event(s) or moments you were able to experience, thanks to the Home from Home apartment?

I have celebrated many a birthday in Dublin and enjoyed partying in nightclubs. It enable me to experience different cultures.

What’s your favourite thing to do in Dublin?

Go partying in the Camden

I love music and I can let my hair down in Dublin.

I also love a bit of shopping and being the tourist

Is there any additional feedback you would like to share?

MDI is a fantastic facility with everything you will need to make your stay comfortable and convenient. It’s a very special place for me – when I’m there I can just relax – the kitchen allows my dietary requirements to be taken care off.
