Atom Folding Lightweight Scooter: Exciting New Equipment Enhancing MDI’s Transport and Equipment Service
At Muscular Dystrophy Ireland (MDI), we are always striving to improve the mobility, independence, and daily experiences of our members. This month, we are delighted to announce two fantastic additions to our Transport and Equipment Service — both acquired with our service users’ needs in mind. Whether you are looking for temporary mobility support or require specialist equipment for safe travel, these new options are here to help.
1. Atom Folding Lightweight Scooter – Now Available for Short-Term Loans
We understand that sometimes, mobility needs are temporary — whether it is during recovery, while waiting for long-term equipment, or for special occasions like family outings or travel. That is why we are introducing the Atom Folding Lightweight Scooter to our short-term loan programme.
Ultra-lightweight & Portable: The Atom folds down quickly and easily, making it simple to transport in the boot of a car.
Convenient & Flexible: Ideal for days out, appointments, or trial use, without the need for a long-term commitment.
Empowering Independence: Enables users to move freely and confidently, even when heavier equipment is not practical.

2. Ombrelo Stroller (Size 3) – Specialist Support for Children During Transport
We are also pleased to introduce the Ombrelo Stroller (Size 3) to our dedicated transport fleet, specifically for children who need extra postural support while travelling with MDI.
Tailored for Children: Suitable for those approximately 110–130 cm tall (43–51 inches) and up to 45 kg (99 lbs). Up until now we have not been able to transport small children and toddlers due to prams or car seats not being compatible with our vehicle safety requirements. This Stroller is crash tested and can be clamped into our existing wheelchair securing systems on all our vehicles.
Safety & Comfort: Features a padded seat, adjustable footrest, recline options, and a secure harness.
Exclusive to MDI Transport: This stroller is not available for loan but is provided as part of our transport service to ensure safe, comfortable journeys to medical appointments, school, or social events.
