Remembering MDI board member, Mr Justice Robert (Bobby) Eagar

We are deeply saddened to learn of the death of MDI member and board member, Mr Justice Robert (Bobby) Eagar on 1 November. Bobby retired from his role as Judge of the High Court in January 2023 after 40 years of practicing law in Dublin. Since joining Muscular Dystrophy Ireland in September 2022, Bobby quickly became an invaluable part of the MDI community. He joined the MDI Board in 2023 and was a member of our Advocacy and Services Committees, as well as MDI’s Research Panel. Bobby’s commitment to social justice was evident in his previous voluntary work with the Dublin Simon Community, where he eventually became Chair, and in his role as founding member of the Irish Refugee Council.

Commenting on his passing, MDI’s CEO, Alan Breathnach said:

“Bobby poured his energy and enthusiasm into improving the lives of people living with neuromuscular conditions, including his own condition, myotonic dystrophy. He was an active presence, taking on roles that demonstrated his commitment and compassion, and generously offering his knowledge and expertise. The MDI community was very fond of him, appreciating his dedication, warmth, and gentle spirit. On behalf of Muscular Dystrophy Ireland’s community, I extend our deepest sympathy to Bobby’s wife, Monica, his daughters Katie and Sara, and extended family.”

Rest in peace, Bobby.
