28th February is Rare Disease Day!

28 February is Rare Disease Day. Raising awareness and generating change for the 300 million people worldwide living with neuromuscular conditions, their families and carers. We’re sharing spotlights on individual members of our community who are living with a variety of neuromuscular conditions to raise awareness about the many conditions experienced by the diverse members of our community to whom MDI offers support. You can start reading about them below.

What is Rare Disease Day?

Rare Disease Day is a globally coordinated movement dedicated to rare diseases, striving for equity in social opportunities, healthcare, and access to diagnosis and therapies for people living with a rare disease.

Since its creation in 2008, Rare Disease Day has played a crucial role in building an international rare disease community—multi-disease, global, and diverse, yet united in purpose.

Get involved with us on Rare Disease Day as we strive to raise awareness, engagement, and support for those living with or caring for someone with a neuromuscular condition

MDI encourages individuals, communities and companies to Show Your Stripes because, just like a zebra’s stripes, every rare individual’s journey and story is unique. In medicine, zebras represent the uncommon answers; when a medical professional “hears hoofbeats,” they are encouraged not to just assume it's a horse but to consider that it could be a zebra.

Show Your Stripes is a fun way to engage neighbours, friends and the larger community on Rare Disease Day. There are so many ways to participate in the campaign. Get Creative!

No matter what you decide to do—or where you do it—don’t forget to take photos and share them with us on social media using the #RareDiseaseDay and #ShowYourStripes hashtags! Just check out our Research Officer Dympna showing her stripes here!!
