The MDI-Dr John Roche Education Bursary, totalling €2,000 annually is now open for applications.

We are excited to announce that the Muscular Dystrophy Ireland-Dr John Roche Education Bursary, totalling €2,000 annually, is now open for applications. MDI hopes to support two of our members with €1,000 each towards their education costs this Autumn.

Muscular Dystrophy Ireland (MDI) is keen to support students living with neuromuscular conditions to attend further and higher education by offering financial support through the Dr John Roche Educational Bursary. MDI – Ireland’s national organisation providing support to people with neuromuscular conditions – recognises that appropriate financial supports are essential for people with neuromuscular conditions to develop their education. We have therefore launched an annual bursary which aims to support the educational costs of students with neuromuscular conditions attending further and higher education.

The value of each bursary is set at €1,000 for each year and will be for a maximum amount of €4,000 over the duration of the students’ educational programme. for two students who are living with a neuromuscular condition to study at an educational institution in the Republic of Ireland that is recognised by Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI). The annual bursary will be awarded each year for the duration of the student’s educational programme. The bursary aims to support students to further their education and transition to meaningful employment, thus empowering them to fully participate in society and reach their potential.

When bursary students have completed their course and gained their qualification, MDI will consider the possibility of offering a six-month paid internship with MDI where appropriate.

The MDI-Dr John Roche Educational Bursary honours the contributions of Dr John Roche who was a lifelong advocate for education and independent living.

The deadline for applications is Friday 15th August 2025.
